Contemporary Limited Editions
“Prints mimic what we are as humans: We are all the same and yet every one is different,” explains the contemporary artist Kiki Smith. “I think there’s a spiritual power in repetition, a devotional quality, like saying rosaries.” From Chuck Close to Yayoi Kusama, nearly all of today’s leading artists journey into printmaking, creating original limited editions in collaboration with prominent print studios like Pace Prints and Two Palms. Since smaller editions are often more valuable, printers and artists will even destroy the materials that they use to create these works—whether that be printing plates or photographic negatives—to make sure that it is impossible to add to the edition later on.
