Art Brut
About
A French term meaning “raw art” or “rough art” that was coined by artist Jean Dubuffet to denote works more popularly known as Outsider Art, which he championed as exemplifying powerful originality, not stifled by education or socialization. Dubuffet began collecting, writing about, and lecturing on Art Brut in the mid 1940s after visiting Switzerland and seeing works by psychiatric patients collected in hospitals there.
