California Art

About

Artists have flocked to California since the 1840s, but it was not until after World War II that the state gained internationally renown as an art center. Major post-war art movements associated with California include the Light and Space Movement and Bay Area Figurative art, and artists consistently identified with the state include Wayne Thiebaud, Ed Ruscha, Robert Irwin, and Richard Misrach. The 2011-12 exhibition "Pacific Standard Time" was a major effort by institutions across California to cement the state's presence in postwar American art history.
