Interlaced Bodies

About

“For me, the nude body is like a raw material. Another artist might use oil or clay. I love the fact that, en masse, it can be turned into an infinite number of shapes or abstractions.”
Spencer Tunick

Images of human bodies crossing, passing over each other, or seemingly entangled have long been seen in Western art. Greek sculptors and artists like El Greco, Peter Paul Rubens, [Théodore Géricault](/artist/theodore-gericault, Carolee Schneemann, Keith Haring and Spencer Tunick, for example, have included combinations of bodies in representations of the fall of Christ, starvation, warfare and battle, rioting, bathing, dancing, sex, and societal liberation.
