Identity Verification FAQ

What is identity verification?

Identity verification is a process that helps us know that you are really you.

Artsy does this by working with a verification partner that will securely validate that your government ID (commonly a driver's license, passport, or national ID card) is real, and that a photo of you matches the photo on your ID.

Why is Artsy requiring identity verification?

Artsy is requiring users to verify their identities in order to provide a seamless, more secure purchasing experience.

Some of our partners require you to complete identity verification before buying artworks or placing bids in an auction.

Artsy may also ask you to complete identity verification in order to make sure that you are really you, and your account is secure.

Does everyone have to verify their identity?

No. Artsy will not require identity verification for users unless they are purchasing certain artworks, registering for auctions that require bidders to be verified, or or if we detect unusual activity on your account.

Do I have to verify my identity every time I make a purchase on Artsy?

No. Once you verify your identity, you will be able to make any purchase or register for any sale that requires identity verification.

In rare situations like a compromised account, we may ask you to verify your identity again in order to protect you and ensure your account is secure and controlled by you.

Does Artsy store my government ID? What happens to my information?

Artsy will not store a copy of your ID or the photo you take during the verification process.

Artsy's identity verification partner will securely store an image of your ID and the photo you take for long enough to complete the verification process. After 30 days, your ID and photo will be securely deleted.

Your ID and the photo you take during the verification process will never be shared with anyone else who uses Artsy, including other users or our selling partners, for any purpose.

What if my ID has a different name than my credit card or account?

The name on your credit card must match the name on your ID, as well as the name on your Artsy account.

We understand that this may not always be straightforward, especially if you commonly go by a name other than your given name. If you do not use the same on your credit card as you do on your ID, please contact verification@artsy.net.

What if someone else uses my account?

Make sure your password is secure and that you are the only person who has access to your Artsy account. Purchases on Artsy must be made in your own name, and this must be the name on your account. Purchases on Artsy cannot be made on behalf of others.
