Sidney Nolan (1917 – 1992) is perhaps Australia’s most celebrated artist. Represented in all state galleries and internationally at New York’s Museum of Modern Art and London’s Tate, he was a voracious and inventive artist. Indeed, from Ned Kelly, Burke and Wills, African animals to China, women in hats and miners — his interests were vast.

In the diversity of his oeuvre, however, lie common themes. Across two parts, we will present a collection of Nolan’s works — finding in them an artist looking for paradise, fascinated by failure and forever adventurous. Nolan was an agile genius, as …
