In 1902, in the picturesque Catskill Mountains in upstate New York, Ralph Radcliffe Whitehead and his wife Jane Byrd McCall set out to create an artist’s utopia — a colony where like-minded artists might gather to live and cultivate their craft. In the 1900’s artists often sought refuge from city life in more quaint rural communities, seeking a return to a simpler life and inspiration from nature.
