Bonne Espérance Gallery presents a selection of photos from the 1950s from the German-born, South African photographer Jürgen Schadeberg (1931-2020).

Often considered the father of South African photography, Mr Schadeberg was born in Berlin in 1931. His mother, an actress, fell in love with a British soldier at the end of World War II and the family emigrated to South Africa. Mr Schadeberg arrived in South Africa in 1950 at the age of 18. He arrived at a pivotal moment in the country’s history - a blossoming of Black South African culture and the beginning of apartheid. He found a job as the …
