Examining the use of symbolic, abstract, and conceptual strategies to convey likeness, "This Is a Portrait If I Say So: Identity in American Art, 1912 to Today" is the first show to explore the impressive breadth of non-mimetic portraiture in modern and contemporary American Art.

Artist Byron Kim delivers the keynote address to open the major summer exhibition at the Bowdoin College Museum of Art, This is a Portrait If I Say So: Identity in American Art, 1912 to Today. Kim's work is included in the exhibition. His remarks will be followed by a discussion with the exhibition co-curators, Anne Collins Goodyear, Kathleen Merrill Campagnolo, and Jonathan Frederick Walz.
A reception and family activities will follow to open the exhibition.
Location: Kresge Auditorium, Visual Arts Center.

Featuring works of art by leading American artists from Marsden Hartley and Alfred Stieglitz, to Robert Rauschenberg and Yoko Ono, to Roni Horne and Glenn Ligon, this timely and groundbreaking exhibition reimagines portraiture and the very way we see ourselves and others.
