Thu, Mar 2, 2023 from 12:00 – 12:30pm UTC
Charlott Rodgers: Cool Ceramics - Hot Foamglass; A Synthesis of opposites (materiality, process and concept) This talk will explore the making processes especially developed and needed to craft the combined Foamglass and ceramic pieces shown at Collect 2023. Slip cast Bone China and volatile Foamglass are joined during a kiln casting (foaming) process to create unusual material combinations. These highly experimental and unconventional making processes are grounded in detailed scientific research and documented to create unexpected aesthetics. Charlott will talk about her fascination with unconventional crafting methods and why defiant making and questioning traditional making conventions are relevant and important.

Artist Talk

Kate Owens: Exercises in Design Textile artist Kate Owens introduces her unconventional block printing practice which combines print with choreography. Owens has had a partially fixed spine since she was nineteen, prompting her to counter this rigidity with movement in her work. Kate will elaborate on her rhythmic approach to textile printing and how it relates to the visual motion within her prints. There will be an opportunity to handle print blocks, hear about recent journeys into natural dyeing and discover Kate’s influences from design to dance arts.
