Spotlight Talk with Linda Eaton

Meet American Made expert Linda Eaton, Director of Collections and Senior Curator of Textiles at Winterthur Museum, as she explores the use of textiles in nineteenth-century American home life. Eaton’s background is in textile conservation, and she teaches at the University of Delaware through the Winterthur Program in American Material Culture. Two free guided tours of the American Made exhibition are available: The Quilts and Stitches Tour takes guests through the exhibition for a closer look at six textile works including quilts, a hand-embroidered sampler, and more. The Whirligigs and Weathervanes Tour focuses on six functional objects ranging from the practical to the whimsical, and discusses the purposes and craftsmanship of these everyday items. Please arrive five minutes before the tours start. No registration is required, but a ticket to the exhibition is necessary. American Made exhibition: $10 (Free for Members).

American Made Mini Workshop » Martha L. Benson and Laura Lyon Redford: Weaving Martha Benson and Laura Redford, authors of the book Ozark Coverlets, will lead this mini workshop on the patterns and designs in textile weaving. Martha L. Benson has studied historic handweavers and textiles in Louisiana, Texas, and the antebellum South, and has led study groups on reproducing historic weaving patterns. Martha has written numerous articles for the Complex Weavers Journal on topics such as regional weaving in the South, Bateman Weave structures, and drawloom patterning. Laura Lyon Redford has been involved with the Northwest Arkansas Handweavers Guild for many years, serving the organization as program chair, librarian, newsletter editor, and membership chair. Since 1992, Laura has taught classes in beginning and intermediate weaving, overshot theory, drafting and profile drafts, lace weaves, krokbragd, and cloth analysis. Discover stories of the women who created Ozark coverlets like those woven in nineteenth-century New England, currently on display in the American Made exhibition. American Made Mini Workshop » Ben Edwards: Sgraffito Local artist Ben Edwards will lead tonight’s mini workshop, guiding participants in learning the technique of sgraffito design on handmade clay vessels. Ben sources clay in Arkansas, and practices traditional and innovative techniques in creating and decorating vessels. He is well versed in the history of crockery and hand-made dishes.
