CURRO presents Tezcatlocan, the first solo exhibition of Claudia Peña Salinas (1975) in Mexico. This exhibition expands the artist's research on the Aztec deities of water Tláloc and Chalchiuhtlicue, relating this ancestral symbolism and knowledge to modernist and contemporary structures. Through processes of travel, documentation and collection, the artist generates a poetic narrative that is both personal and political. The works presented on this occasion address topics ranging from the proliferation of images, the myth and the construction of national identity to gender issues and the current water crisis in Mexico City. Her practice combines sculptural, pictorial and architectural attributes; she highlights the use of textile, as well as the symbols, colors and materials used by pre-Hispanic peoples, thus creating a space of ambiguity and mysticism to rethink contemporary art.
