Press Release

The works featuring in Other Saints seek to explore issues of sainthood, art and the relationship between the two. The overall body of works seems to solicit the spectator’s eye with their aesthetics, which lends them a ritual dimension.

The Dan Gallery is proud to present: Other Saints New group exhibition Artists: Vered Aharonovitch, Igor Skaletsky, Julie Filipenko, Costa Magarakis Can art serve as an amulet? Can it protect those coming in contact with it? Can it shelter them from the world around them? These are but some of the questions raised by the works that feature in Other Saints, an exhibition by four artists marked by a coded, defined inner world. The works featuring in Other Saints seek to explore issues of sainthood, art and the relationship between the two. The overall body of works seems to solicit the spectator’s eye with their aesthetics, which lends them a ritual dimension. The works of the four artists, each in its own way, weave parallel lines between the artist and saint, the work of art and the amulet. Vered Aharonovitch, known for her children figurines, presents a new series that features self, allegorical portraits, invoking the stories of female martyrs, who are placed in golden frames that reference the saint pendants worn by believers. Costa Magarakis, a Greek-born Israeli artist, gained renown for his shoe sculptures, made of epoxy combined with metal, wood and ready-made found objects. Comprising discarded items, his works are painstakingly treated, thereby climbing up the social ladder to acquire an artistic halo. Julie Filipenko, graduate of the Department of Fine Art, Bezalel, presents a new series of works where she pursues her exploration of powerful female portraits, comprising childhood memories, dreams and fantasies, while her young figures are painfully beautiful and by no means saints. Igor Skaletsky, who divides his time between Tel Aviv, Berlin and Moscow, creates works that merge old and new, classic and contemporary, haute culture and low culture. Skaletsky presents a series of works that spin feminine yarns, marked by a virtually impossible link between historical motives visual images from contemporary mass media.
