Back to "Rock, Paper, Scissors": Suzanna Frosch, Polly King, John Rosis at Edward Hopper House

About

Statement

Curated by Joanne Howard, these artists share a fierce commitment to formal structure as they collage and layer materials to create space and depth. The works – though wide in interpretation – are connected by a sense of restraint without sacrificing elegance or lushness.

"A fierce commitment to formal structure coupled with special attention to the materials that take them there, are shared qualities in the works of Polly King, John Rosis and Suzanna Frosch. These three artists are setting out to concretize their quest for aesthetic logic, and are doing so on paper, with a variety of materials. Through a patient process that involves working in layers, their unique interpretations of space and composition come forth." CURATOR Joanne Howard earned her MFA at Hunter College, her BFA from Syracuse University and attended The Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. She received a Bessie Award for Set Design with Big Dance Theater, a Brooklyn based theater company she has been collaborating with since 1992. Howard was also the recipient of an Architecture/ Environmental Structures Fellowship from the New York Foundation for the Arts. She has been an adjunct professor of visual arts at Rockland Community College since 2006.
