Statement

Martha Friedman explores the pleasures, anxieties, and vulnerabilities of the corporeal body through different materials and mediums.

Press Release

In addition to our physical vulnerability as humans, as a woman the artist is keenly aware of the dialectic of public and private that is played out around, over, and in her body. This leads to work that probes the abstract boundaries separating the inside and outside of bodies in the forms of tongues, skins, and sphincters, elemental sites of pain, pleasure, fear and desire. Over time, her works evolved a sharper edge, both literally and metaphorically, using concrete, steel, and rubber to form, deform and test the boundaries of the physical world.
