Rather than a series, the figures presented in this exhibition form a group of presences, each emerging from the painting in a precarious, unanticipated way. The meaning of these apparitions is most often revealed after the fact, and each one here is struck dumb - a silence of varying hues, but always the result of a sudden defeat of speech in the face of an event that strikes or sweeps us away.
