From the idea of ruins as symbols of an ancient past, and as witnesses to a political status quo, to the concept of ruins as projections of the future this international group show brings together different artistic approaches to the subject matter.

Umgekehrte Ruinen Round Table accompanying the exhibition: Dr. Eva Schmidt, Director Museum für Gegenwartskunst, Siegen and Katya Gardea Browne, Clemens Botho Goldbach, Julia Höner, Ludwig Seyfarth. A discussion of the relationship between historic and modern-day ruins, based on Robert Smithson’s idea of Ruins in Reverse and his famous project, Hotel Palenque, located on the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico.

Dr. Brian Dillon, Royal College of Art, London, talk Since at least the eighteenth century, the ruin has been a decayed but eloquent presence in art and aesthetics. Ruins remind us of the past but are really oriented towards the future; this talk will describe some of the ways contemporary art looks to the future through ruins.
