Shuvinai Ashoona was born in 1961 in Cape Dorset, NU. She has been instrumental
in reshaping contemporary inuit art. Her drawings break from tradition and
challenge stereotypes about Inuit art by incorporating references to the past and
present alongside her own highly imaginaitive and individual subject matter.
Over the last decade she has become the leading voice in contemporary Inuit art.
Internationally, she is recognized as one of Canada’s premier artists.
