At first glance, Eemil Karila’s paintings of recent years look like beautiful depictions of the environment, their main subject being plants, but they are intended to speak on behalf of nature. Underlying these works is the posthumanist manifesto – a critical view of the notion that humanity is above all other creatures – that Karila began setting out in his art in 2019. In these new paintings plant and meadow landscapes are bathed in light and are free to flourish on wasteland from which all human presence has disappeared.
