MOVART is pleased to announce its collaboration with artist Márcio Carvalho for his first solo exhibition in partnership with the gallery in Lisbon. Please join us for the opening of the exhibition "To Escape Tradition. To Persist Unmarked." on March 2nd, in our gallery in Lisbon.
The exhibition "To Escape Tradition. To Persist Unmarked" confronts the viewer with modes of public participation capable of rethinking the role that cultural heritage and its celebration can and/or should play in a time of post-colonial violence.
Carrier of fine irony, the work of Márcio Carvalho investigate various planes of memory: autobiographic, collective, and the public space as a mediator for remembrance. They use fiction and memorial exercises of minority groups to imagine forms of colonial resistance, to counter the power showcased in monuments and the exercises of consecration of power, and to inevitably project their fall. The spectator is invited to play an active role in questioning the political message and the hierarchies that monumentality conveys. The exhibition makes use of distinct medias, such as drawing, painting and video, integrating as well a sculpture of monumental scale.
