Dazzler with a Brush: The Art of Franklin Williams

Susan Landauer's talk accompanies the first retrospective of Petaluma-based artist, Franklin Williams, covering the 50-year span of his career. She will discuss William's roots in Bay Area Funk art of the 1960s, including his innovative hand-stitched works that brought the low-art sphere of crafts into the realm of high art, and will trace the development of the stunningly intricate, richly textured paintings that continue to occupy the artist today.
Susan Landauer, a Bay Area independent art historian and curator, holds a Ph.D. in Art History from Yale University and specializes in West Coast Art. Her most recent books include Of Dogs and Other People: The Art of Roy De Forest (2017), Women of Abstract Expressionism (2016), Hassel Smith, Paintings 1937-1997 (2012), and Richard Diebenkorn: The Ocean Parks (2012).
