Lecture: Material Matters in African Art

McCormick 101 Christa Clarke, a specialist in historical and contemporary African art from the Newark Museum, will offer a history of Western responses to the surfaces of African sculpture and will explore the symbolic, ritual, and aesthetic meanings of materials for works on view in the special exhibition Surfaces Seen and Unseen: African Art at Princeton. A reception at the Princeton University Art Museum will follow.
