Back to James Zamora: #interiors from @instagram at Ro2 Art

About

Statement

As a realist painter living through social media, James Zamora peels back filters created by popular lifestyle bloggers representing "authentic living." In loosely recreating environments on canvas, abstracting details, the artist contemplates the natural design and composition.

Opening Reception

Fri, May 20, 2016 from 7:00 – 10:00pm UTC
Ro2 Art is proud to announce '#interiors from @instagram' -- an exhibition of new paintings by Denton-based artist James Zamora, taking place from May 20 through June 5, 2016 at Shotgun, located at 1717 Gould Street in The Cedars neighborhood of Dallas. An opening reception will be held Friday, May 20 from 7 to 10pm. "As a realist painter living through social media, I've stumbled upon a movement, an ideal. I began to notice a particular aesthetic saturating the cyber world. This aesthetic presents to the public an ideal lifestyle in one's home life and how to seize the everyday. These lifestyle Instagram accounts give us a facade, beautifully lit photographs, overexposed whites, design, and an overall positive outlook that could be interpreted as "fake". There are both positive responses as well as negative responses to the idea of "Living Authentic" through Instagram accounts. My aim is to record interiors from Instagram taken by lifestyle and branding professionals, and express to an audience how many people buy into an image with the number of "likes" that photo has received. My paintings have altered these Instagram photos to a place of contemplation by simply abstracting details and leaving the viewer with the photo's natural design and composition. And through this investigation I get to paint bright, well composed images, and raise an awareness of this aesthetic movement into the everyday."
