About

Press Release

Artists in postwar Italy eschewed the chrome-plated slickness of the art of the early twentieth century in favour of works that explored natural colours and materials. They created art that reflected, altered, and challenged the quotidian, expanding traditional media to coal, plastic, and even burlap. Working in the wake of destruction, the colour black naturally became a dominating presence. This exhibition explores the beauty conceived in the darkest palettes in one of modern art's most formative moments.
