From Harunobu to Utamaro, ukiyo-e artists were enchanted by the mysterious and illusory world of the Yoshiwara, Edo's licensed brothel district. Despite a shadowed reality, these women became the epitome of beauty, elegance and fashion in 18th century Japan.
