Even with the advances of modern art, in works by Courbet or Manet, women – although
more daring and confident – continued to be objectified, subject to an extensively sexualized gaze
marked by gender stereotypes.
Lize Bartelli’s work resides in this historical gap, based on the portrait of women from a female
perspective, disinterested in traditional functions or roles. Tracing a new lineage of portraiture, she
deals with canvas and oil paint, as well as objects incorporated into the pictorial surface, to discuss the
space occupied by the figures she chooses to represent.
