Back to Daniel Crooks | Machine Drawing at Sullivan+Strumpf

About

Statement

Sullivan+Strumpf is thrilled to present Machine Drawing, a new body of works by Daniel Crooks that extend the artist's preoccupation with the shape of time, here in new forms and mediums.

Press Release

The drawings in this exhibition were created with a mechanical drawing apparatus, hand-built by Crooks in 2021. By engaging with the machine, Crooks’ contemplates the nature and impetus of drawing. To draw is to pull or drag, as the machine drags the pen across the page. To “draft”, derives its etymology from the draft-horse, hauling the plough across the field. The lines drawn by the machine deliberately teeter between the flawless and the imperfect, lacking the fluidity of the human hand, yet not quite pure mechanical precision.
