Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn, known by his first name Rembrandt, is considered one of the most important and best-known Dutch Golden Age artists.
Due to the different stylistic means with which the master worked, some of his etchings appear like small paintings due to the fine and differentiated linework, while other works with loose, sketchy lines are reminiscent of pen and ink drawings.
He worked as a painter, etcher and draughtsman, ran a workshop and trained artists. His oeuvre includes portraits, landscapes and biblical and mythological themes. In 1631, he moved to Amsterdam, where he became a celebrated artist. Despite his success, he suffered considerable financial problems and died in poverty.
