I Imagine: Paintings in the Narrative Tradition by Susan Reid Danton

This piece is about emergence at pivotal stages of life, naturally and intuitively.

A fata morgana is a superior mirage that forms over expansive water, desert or ice consisting of multiple vectors of moisture and refracted light. Historically, they've been considered extremely mysterious, especially when a sailor didn't know what he was looking at. An Italian term, it also translates to Morgan the Fairy or Morgan le Fay, the powerful enchantress who ferried King Arthur to Avalon to heal from battle. Avalon then dissolves into the mist, never to be found again.

This painting has been 24 years in the making, and it is finally and absolutely complete. In concert with my urge to paint the female form, I took the liberty of adding "breasts" to my muse, a mechanical artist's model. The symbolic nature of the piece is it's obvious strength, and my heart fills and stretches with hope for the future at the sight of it.

I am fascinated by the concept of life after death. More so, by the fact that I know so little about it. One day, it'll be my own little secret.

She emerged from a scribble, as is the customary approach. Have you ever run your hand under water, and wondered about the cryptic motion of the surface as it yields to the force of your hand?

Haumea rocks. She is, in my humble opinion, the mother of them all, albeit not in the conventional sense of motherhood. Kinda like my own experience, and that's okay. Ponder the notion of a gift that keeps on giving, no matter what circumstances may threaten it. And, never, ever bet against it.

A difficult birth precedes all paintings in this series; they all reflect a steep growth spurt. I have found that all good relationships are predicated on a willingness to endure as much emotional risk as possible, even at the risk of total humiliation or loss. Be daring and delicious, and dive in!

This is a piece about generativity. The Crone is in service to the young, her experience an invaluable asset to those who follow, and, one day, she will cede her leadership to the call of her own vibrant, fecund future.

A spontaneous or natural liking or sympathy for someone or something; a similarity of characteristics suggesting a relationship, especially a resemblance in structure between animals, plants, or languages. Apart from how a dictionary may describe it, Affinity is a crucial point of contact between two individuals who must, at all costs, move into the future together ...

It is about the sky. That's where the pursuit originates and, from there, everything responds. There is action everywhere and its unclear who is pursuing whom. Eventually, one must decide on the source of one's tension. Friend or foe? Yes, its angst-filled, but which of life's riddles isn't? One of my favorite pieces.

A multi-generational exploration of motifs, mores and mysteries that are ingrained in the maternal line of influence. This painting is, in general, an homage to past, present and future generations of women. In particular, making it underscored the esteem I hold for the women who shaped me and gave me hope and flight. We were, and are, all goddesses in the rough.

Something that I've always wanted to do, which is, as yet, in my dreams. I am a diver at heart, if not in practice, and I feel great peace flowing with this piece. Its a Peace piece.
