Choi Young-wook's paintings feature only moon jars. Just as a person is the subject of a portrait, the jar holds that same level of importance. Initially, Choi focused on creating paintings with a landscapes in monochromatic tones. However, his encounter with the jar around 2005 led to a significant transformation in his work.
By drawing 'bingyoel' on the moon jar, Choi Young-wook expressed the drama of life through the cycles of meeting, breaking up, and reuniting over time. If you deconstruct the shape of the jar, the composition reveals countless lines and their intersections. These lines were meticulously drawn by the artist using fine and colored pencils without any equipment. Strength and weakness, creation and extinction, meeting and parting are all engraved in these lines. Visually, they may appear as mere scratches or physical marks, but in context, they symbolize human relationships occurring throughout the span of life. In other words, what is consistently represented in the artwork is the connection between people. Perhaps we are destined to be beings who begin and end in relationships. This is because the history of relationships shapes our identities, creates memories, and forms our sense of self.
