Composition 1975 is typical of Norman Bluhm’s later paintings. Bluhm was never a follower of anyone, even though he had personal ties to many of the artists working in New York City at the same time. Neither was Bluhm an easel painter. His format, technique, and his intensity were distinctly his own. This personal style is evident in this later works which communicate a fresh, raw energy and a greater sophistication.
In 1957 the very same year our piece was conceived, Bluhm was honored with his own solo show at the iconic Leo Castelli Gallery which was known to showcase cutting edge contemporary works of the time. This show revealed Bluhm’s innate color sense and his openness to accident. With characteristic incisiveness Bluhm stated that “sometimes the art is the mistake.” His paintings during the 50’s like Untitled 1957 are lyrical in nature.
