For the first time, The Photography Show presented by AIPAD will present special curated exhibitions of private collections in its new location at Pier 94 on Manhattan’s west side. The highly-anticipated 37th edition of the fair from the Association of International Photography Art Dealers (AIPAD) will take place March 30 – April 2, 2017. The Show will commence with a vernissage on March 29, 2017.

Three special exhibitions on loan from the international collections of Martin Z. Margulies, Madeleine P. Plonsker, and Artur Walther will be on view at The Photography Show. In addition to the special exhibitions, more than 110 of the world’s leading fine art galleries will offer exceptional photography from early masters, modern luminaries, and emerging and established contemporary artists. More than 25 book sellers and publishers will also be represented at the Show.

Structures of Identity: Photography from The Walther Collection will examine the ways that photographers, across a range of cultures and historical periods, have used portraiture to affirm or challenge social stereotypes constructed around notions of race, gender, class, and nationality. This selection of 375 photographs, shown for the first time in New York, establishes a dialogue between significant historical, vernacular images (daguerreotypes, American tintypes, cartes de visite from Europe and South Africa, and American mugshots) and key contemporary works from Africa, Asia, Europe, and North America. Artists include Richard Avedon, Bernd and Hilla Becher, Seydou Keïta, Zanele Muholi, August Sander, Malick Sidibé, and Zhang Huan.

“We are pleased to join with AIPAD in inaugurating its new location at Pier 94. This partnership allows us to introduce some of the investigations that we have undertaken over the past decade at our space in Neu-Ulm, Germany. These projects reflect our long-term engagement with African photography, and emphasize our overarching commitment to research, publications, exhibitions, and critical exchange. Our aim is to expand the history and interpretation of photography, in all its global cultural contexts and uses," says Walther.

Fifteen Countries: On Loan from the Collection of Martin Z. Margulies will present work by 22 artists from 15 countries including Afghanistan, China, Cuba, Egypt, England, Manila, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Poland, Russia, South Africa, Spain, Turkey, and the U.S. Artists include Jeff Brouws, Fan Ho, Yang Hu, Pieter Hugo, Anastasia Khoroshilova, Justine Kurland, and Alec Soth. Martin Margulies is well known for the Margulies Warehouse exhibition space in Miami.

Margulies notes, “Collecting photography for me is about collecting images. The photos in this exhibition come from 22 different artists, each with their own path and process of looking at the world. Today more than ever the world communicates through images. Artists from all over the map are picking up a camera and using the language of photography to communicate what they see of the world around them. In this exhibition, there are vintage and contemporary photographs of 15 different countries. It is a pleasure for us to put together this exhibition for AIPAD and we hope everyone enjoys the photographs and perhaps discovers something interesting for their own collections.”

The Light in Cuban Eyes, from the collection of Madeleine P. Plonsker, documents the artistic path of contemporary Cuban photography from 1992 (when the Soviets left the island) to the present. A book of the same name was published in 2015 by Lake Forest College. Plonsker began traveling to Havana in 2002, and her efforts have brought recognition to many artists whose work was unknown in the U.S. Featuring work by Juan Carlos Alom, Arien Chang, Adrian Fernandez, Eduardo Garcia, Eduardo Hernandez, Alejandro Gonzalez, Liudmila & Nelson, and Alejandro Perez, the collection aims to express the concerns of Cuba’s artistic community as it evolves and grows.

Plonsker says, “I have attended AIPAD every year since its inception and regard the gallery community as part of my large collecting family of friends. I am honored to have AIPAD acknowledge the closeness of our relationship by featuring work from my contemporary Cuban collection.”

All three collectors are scheduled to speak publicly about their collections at the talks and panel discussions to be held during the run of The Photography Show from March 30 – April 2, 2017. A schedule will be announced in the weeks prior to the Show.
