The first design museum in Italy, The Triennale Design Museum is now on Artsy! On April 4th, timed with the start of Salone del Mobile in Milan, two new exhibitions open that will stay up through February 25, 2015.

Italian Design Beyond the Crisis: Autarky, Austerity, and Autonomy brings together more than 600 works created during three periods of economic austerity in Italy (the 1930s, the 1970s, and the 2000s) when self-production in design was either embraced or denied. The exhibition illustrates the ways economic crisis stimulate creativity, from the birth of great Italian design in the 1930s, through the establishment of regional production districts in the 1970s, and onto the autonomy and production advancements of the 2000s.

The second exhibition, Italian Design Icons includes a group of important works from the museum’s permanent collection plus a rotating selection of essential works, as chosen by ten legendary Italian designers including Enzo Mari, Alessandro Mendini, and Gaetano Pesce. Each designer’s selection is on view for about a month.
