Elena Bajo is the winner of the V AUDEMARS PIGUET Award for the production of a work of art at ARCOmadrid 2017.
The winning work is a joint project of García Galería and ANNEX 14
The artist, Elena Bajo, has been announced winner of the V Audemars Piguet Award for the production of a work of art at ARCOmadrid 2017. Her work, All Tangled Up in a Fading Star, is a joint project presented by García Galería –Madrid- and ANNEX 14 –Zurich-, and will be exhibited in the Fair’s VIP Lounge, within the Audemars Piguet space for the duration of the event from 22 to 26 February.
The jury, made up of Borja Baselga, director of Fundación Banco Santander; Rosina Gómez Baeza, Factoría Cultural (Matadero Madrid); Lorena Martínez de Corral, independent curator; Manuel Segade, director of CA2M; Juan Várez, collector and managing director of Christie’s; Winka Angelrath, director of Exhibitions of Audemars Piguet; Eloy Martínez de la Pera, art adviser of Audemars Piguet Iberia; Carmen Sáenz, Country General Manager of Audemars Piguet Iberia; and Carlos Urroz, director of ARCOmadrid, also highlighted the quality of the 33 projects presented by galleries and artists from around the world.
On this occasion, the award, endowed with 15,000 euro for the production of the work, went to All Tangled Up in a Fading Star, the project by the Madrid-based artist Elena Bajo.
Elena Bajo
Elena Bajo (Madrid, 1976) lives and works between Berlin and Los Angeles. Her works are conceptual and based on research. In her art, she uses the actual process of producing the work as the starting point and the work or exhibition space used, as a laboratory. Her production extends to painting, sculpture, installation or performance. She essentially uses or constructs materials found in both her everyday and personal environment, and in the workplaces she interacts with: her own studio, the galleries she exhibits in or the art school.
She has participated in the creation of the Los Angeles D’CLUB (Divestment Club) group, dedicated to activities tackling climate change and the use of fossil fuels. MA in Fine Arts from Central Saint Martin’s School of Art in London in 2005, she also obtained an MA in Architecture from ESARQ in Barcelona in 2002. Reader in Goldsmith’s College of London; Rhode Island School of Design, RISD, Providence and Sheffield Hallam University, Sheffield; Saas-Fee Summer Institute of Art in Berlin. She has recently exhibited at the Kunsthalle Sao Paulo, Brazil and has also participated in group exhibitions such as the Mardin Biennial in Turkey, or the Kunsthal Charlottenborg in Copenhagen.
