Fundación ARCO awards the “A” Awards for Collecting on its 21st edition

Isabel and Agustín Coppel are the award-winners on this occasion
Madrid, 1 December 2016.-For the twenty-first year, the Fundación ARCO, promoted by IFEMA, has granted the “A” Awards for Collecting. On this occasion, it has awarded six distinctions acknowledging the artistic value of the works in the collections of both collectors and institutions, as well as their endeavours to drive the diffusion of contemporary art.
Following the meeting of the Board of Trustees and the Advisory Board of Fundación ARCO last October 27th, the collections of Eduardo Costantini, Eduardo Hochschild, Fundação EDP, Galila Barzilai-Hollander, Helga de Alvear and Isabel and Agustín Coppel were distinguished for their involvement in the development of contemporary culture.
The winners will be presented on Friday 2nd December in a lunch for the presentation of #ArgentinaPlataformaARCO, organized by Jorge M. Pérez, José Andrés and ARCOmadrid in the restaurant Bazaar Mar – SLS Brickell in Miami.
EDUARDO COSTANTINI - Argentina
Eduardo Costantini, whose collection is on the vanguard of Latin American art from the 20th-century to the present day and describes the historic and professional evolution of a private collection, has been awarded for his work in diffusing Latin American art in the world, particularly for the creation of the Museo MALBA in Buenos Aires.
Over the course of ARCOmadrid 2017, a selection of his works will be exhibited in the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando.
EDUARDO HOCHSCHILD - Peru
The Colección Hochshchild, made up of a series of Peruvian visual art works from the late 20th and early 21st century, is a private collecting project first and foremost, that focuses on opening mental spaces for the most recent Peruvian art in the collective psyche.
It has been distinguished by the Fundación ARCO for its work in spreading contemporary art and visual creation from Peru, and for the foundation of a specific collection, which will be exhibited in the gallery Alcalá 31 during ARCOmadrid 2017.
FUNDAÇÃO EDP - Portugal
Fundação EDP Portugal houses one of the best contemporary art collections in Portugal, and this year inaugurated the Museo de Arte, Arquitectura y Tecnología (MAAT) in Lisbon. The centre, directed by the Portuguese architect Pedro Gadanho, focuses on contemporary culture, combining visual arts and the media, architecture and cities, science and technology, society and reflection.
Fundação EDP has been awarded this distinction for the creation of an enormously relevant Portuguese art collection, and for supporting the internationalisation of its country’s art abroad.
GALILA BARZILAI-HOLLANDER - Belgium
The Galila Barzilai-Hollander collection includes over 400 works by contemporary artists soon to be exhibited in a space dedicated to them in Brussels. This is a highly personal collection, motivated by a close relationship with the artists, with whom Galila herself forges “a very close bond, we stay in touch and they form part of my life.”
Through this award, Fundación ARCO wished to highlight Galila’s passion for discovering new artists for her collection in the different scenarios and places she visits.
HELGA DE ALVEAR - Spain
In 1967, Helga de Alvear bought her first work of art and, without any notion of how significant that act would turn out to be in the future, set in motion an activity that has persisted to the present day, gaining in passion, professionalism and tenacity. Three qualities that have enabled her to put together one of the most important collections in Europe.
Fundación ARCO wishes to draw particular attention to the quality and dedication of the works selected for her collection, as well as her willingness to participate in exhibitions all over the world and the creation of the Centro de Artes Visuales Fundación Helga de Alvear de Cáceres, soon to complete its expansion
ISABEL AND AGUSTÍN COPPEL - Mexico
Isabel and Agustín Coppel started to collect art at the start of the nineties with a selection of modern Mexican art, which went on to evolve towards both national and international contemporary art, placing a major emphasis on photography.
On this edition, various research and creation projects have been awarded for their collaboration with different museums and institutions both in Mexico and abroad. In the course of ARCOmadrid 2017, they will present the exhibition Punto de Partida, under the curatorship of Magnolia de la Garza and Patrick Charpenel, in Sala de Arte de la Fundación Banco Santander.
