Brendan Fernandes’s Art Toronto Selections

Art Toronto has always been an important event in Canada, bringing together a diverse group of galleries and showcasing artists working from many unique perspectives. This year—faced with a global pandemic and unprecedented social uprisings around the world—artists have been challenged to think ever more critically about our roles and agency. My selection comes from an intersection of queer, POC and indigenous artists, each piece is a launch pad to ask questions, share new perspectives and invite conversation. In our current, precarious moment in history, the ability of artworks to build social consciousness is all the more vital in challenging the social and political systems that have brought about this precarity. For me, these artists express a powerful hope that solidarity can be fostered and together we can build a better world.
