Good Foot Forward: Curated by Kitty Scott
For much of the last century, the pull of gravity was the antithesis of a modernist idealization of the vertical picture plane, from Jean Arp’s scattered scraps of paper to Richard Serra’s thrown molten lead. Artists today have inherited this critical paradigm while wedding it to more urgent concerns: we continue to be pulled downward, but are now drawn toward the ground, toward issues of land sovereignty, ancestral knowledge, the political economy of real estate, the undersides of domesticity and the labor of the handmade and assembled. Good Foot Forward brings together contemporary artists who, through their diverse practices, share an address to the earthbound, using this force to reflect upon our current forms of what constitutes a livable life.
