10 In-Demand Works on Artsy This Week: June 3, 2021

Szabolcs Bozó, Home Again (2020)

The Hungarian-born artist Szabolcs Bozó toes a fine line between painting and drawing with his works featuring mischievous critters. This 2020 painting on paper, a prime example of his experimental approach, has attracted a number of inquiries since being uploaded in late May by Remes Advisory. The delightful work features a misshapen yellow bird tipping its hat to an unsuspecting viewer.

Jonny Niesche, Schein Blossom (Kansai Hanami) (2021)

This new work by Australian artist Jonny Niesche was recently uploaded to Artsy by New York–based gallery The Hole. The painting is currently included in an eye-catching two-person exhibition, titled “Total Vibration,” at the gallery, which features works by Schein and fellow Australia-based artist Michael Staniak. One of Niesche’s trompe l’oeil “void” paintings, Schein Blossom (Kansai Hanami) recalls the optically dazzling work of James Turrell, though it actually draws inspiration from Ziggy Stardust and the camp aesthetics of David Bowie’s alluring glam-rock period.

Claire Tabouret, Makeup (green dots) (2021)

After Claire Tabouret’s record-breaking sale at Christie’s “Post-War & Contemporary” auction this past May, demand for works by the French artist has continued to surge. This 2021 portrait, uploaded by Almine Rech in late May, has received a frenzy of interest on Artsy. This enigmatic work, featuring a woman surrounded by a yellow-hued halo, is a quintessential example of Tabouret’s introspective portraits.

Egami Etsu, Face (ca. 2021)

For her first solo exhibition in Paris at the A2Z Art Gallery, the young Japanese-born, Beijing-based artist Egami Etsu created a series of works that combine landscape and portraiture. Inspired by her time living and studying in the U.S., Europe, and Asia, he paintings, including Face, seek to examine the harsh “barriers of communication” that Etsu experienced. Constructed with lush, sinuous lines, the gestural strokes of the figures are separated by white borders underscoring the complexities of language. Etsu was featured this year in Forbes magazine’s “30 Under 30” for the arts in Asia.

Mr. Doodle, Black&White#18 (2019)

This work by the highly sought-after Mr. Doodle, a.k.a. Sam Cox, is attracting an influx of interest on Artsy. The strong demand for the British artist’s scribbles, which he refers to as “graffiti spaghetti,” is not surprising. In the past five years, the market for Mr. Doodle’s work has exploded. The British artist’s dedicated sale at Christie’s Hong Kong this past May had a 100 percent sell-through rate, with all 27 lots finding buyers for a total of HK$5.7 million (US$730,264). Titled Black&White#18, this canvas presents an excellent opportunity to collect a lively drawing by the young creative.

Evie O’Connor, Annabel’s Mayfair (2021)

Informed by a background in textile design, the London-based Evie O’Connor paints stylized scenes of the exclusive stomping grounds of the wealthy. This pastel-hued painting features the opulent pink-on-pink bathroom at Annabel’s, a private, members-only club in Mayfair, London. These new escapist scenes are featured in her current solo show at Taymour Grahne Projects’s new second location in London. Though the works may appear harmless and appealing, they are grounded by critiques of excessive wealth and greed. This piece, now sold, was recently handpicked to be featured in Artsy’s new curated collection, Trove.

Tahnee Lonsdale, Family Dynamics (2021)

This tender, evocative canvas by the Los Angeles–based artist Tahnee Lonsdale received a significant amount of buzz this week. The work, which has now sold, showcases the artist’s deft ability to create vast yet intimate scenes, rife with semi-abstract figures. Lonsdale’s works are currently being exhibited in a new solo show at London’s Cob Gallery, and she is scheduled for a solo show at Night Gallery in 2022.

Prince Gyasi, Dreaming with Attitude (2021)

This vibrant photograph by the Ghanaian artist Prince Gyasi is included in Nil Gallery’s presentation at 1-54 New York 2021, which also includes work by Abe Odedina and Banele Khoza. Titled Dreaming with Attitude, the piece is a radiant demonstration of the 23-year-old’s ability to capture uplifting shots of children and teenagers in their coastal surroundings, all through the lens of an iPhone.

Salvador Dalí, Elephant Royale (ca. 1976)

At John Moran Auctioneers’s “Postwar & Contemporary Art + Design and Prints & Multiple” sale, this etching by the renowned Surrealist artist Salvador Dalí is gathering interest. Though the auction doesn’t close until June 9th, the work has already reached close to double its high estimate of $700. Part of an edition of 250, the drawing incorporates Dalí’s recurring motif of elephants, an animal he portrayed to examine weight and structure.
