10 In-Demand Works on Artsy This Week: August 26, 2021

Roby Dwi Antono, Rima (2021)

Roby Dwi Antono’s market has continued to heat up over the last few months following his record-breaking sale on Artsy this past June. Rima, uploaded by Brunswick, Australia’s Beinart Gallery in early August, has attracted a wave of interest from collectors. Executed in spray paint, the monochrome canvas features a child-animal hybrid, rendered in a soft, blurred style. The piece alludes to the way the Indonesian artist integrates hazy childhood memories into the work.

Willem Hoeffnagel, This is not to tropical (2021)

Emerging Dutch artist Willem Hoeffnagel fuses elements of cartoons with art historical references to create his playful paintings of anthropomorphic figures. This is not to tropical, which is currently featured in the group show “Familia” at Hong Kong–based gallery Woaw, has received a steady stream of inquiries. The central figure in the work, with their stylized body and expressive oval eyes, resembles the work of contemporary artist Baldur Helgason, as well as High Renaissance portraiture.

Isshaq Ismail, Sentiments 4 (2019)

This acrylic-on-canvas work by Isshaq Ismail has received significant attention from Artsy collectors since it was uploaded to the platform in mid-August by London gallery DELAHUNTY. Titled Sentiments 4, this richly textured painting is a distinctive work by the Ghanaian artist who often employs thick, gestural brushstrokes to depict subjects with grotesque features. The protagonists in Ismail’s paintings are meant to convey themes of desire, wrongdoing, power, and hope.

Genesis Tramaine, Black Woman University. (2020)

Shaped by her religious upbringing, New Jersey–based artist Genesis Tramaine has described herself as a “devotional painter.” The artist captures the spirited expressions of Black faces in her expressive portraits, often inspired by visions she has while praying. In this editioned work, the subject is framed against a rust-colored background, while their face is filled with exuberant colors and frenetic scrawls. This piece has drawn serious demand from collectors in the short time since it was uploaded to Artsy in mid-August by Los Angeles’s iv gallery.

Egami Etsu, Social distancing (2021)

This painting by Egami Etsu continues to gather interest since it was featured in the artist’s first-ever solo exhibition in Paris at A2Z Art Gallery. The Japanese-born, Beijing-based artist’s works in the show, including Social distancing, are composed of thick, colorful brushstrokes that morph into human features. Oscillating between figuration and abstraction, the lush canvases seem to convey a sense of misunderstanding between the artist and the viewer.

Yuichi Hirako, Leaf Shape 02 (2021)

Now on hold, this Yuichi Hirako painting on wood has been subject to a high number of collector inquiries in the past week on Artsy. Leaf Shape 02 is featured in the artist’s current solo exhibition, “Mount Mariana,” at Seoul’s Gallery Baton, on view through September 16th. The whimsical piece depicts an interior filled with flora and fauna and Hirako’s signature hybrid character, “Tree Man.” The work underscores the importance of humans’ ability to coexist harmoniously with nature.

Mira Dancy, Hours of day / Holes of night (Plant, Animal, Woman) (2021)

This engrossing work by Mira Dancy is currently exhibited in “Sunburst,” a group show at Various Small Fires’s Seoul location, presented in collaboration with Night Gallery. The exhibition brings together new, hyper-chromatic works by Dancy, Andrea Marie Breiling, Samara Golden, and Robert Nava and explores the ways that color can channel emotion. Hours of day / Holes of night (Plant, Animal, Woman), replete with abstract forms and mythical figures, has garnered a flurry of inquiries on Artsy. The piece diverges from Dancy’s earlier figurative work centered on female nudes.

Mel Bochner, Thank You! (2019)

American conceptual artist Mel Bochner is widely known for his multicolored “Thesaurus” paintings and prints in which he displays a single word and its synonyms in a variety of bold hues. Thank You!, an engraved monoprint, is a continuation of the iconic series, which Bochner developed in order to examine the intersection of language and fine art. The print, uploaded to Artsy by David Benrimon Fine Art in early July, has received a steady stream of inquiries from collectors.

Dennis Osadebe, Enjoy Yourself (2021)

Drawing inspiration from Pop aesthetics and traditional Nigerian crafts, the self-taught artist Dennis Osadebe is gathering renown for his striking prints and paintings. Utilizing bright colors and flat picture planes, the artist presents through his works a joyous counter-narrative of the West’s depictions of life in Nigeria. Enjoy Yourself has been subject to a frenzy of bidding activity at Heritage’s “Urban Art” auction, surpassing its high estimate well ahead of the sale’s closing date of September 1st. Tennis champion Naomi Osaka recently commissioned Osadebe to create a work for the new cover of Racquet magazine.
