Ed Clark, Glenn Ligon among top reported sales at Frieze New York’s VIP day.

The 2024 edition of Frieze New York is off to a promising start at The Shed. Under the directorship of Christine Messineo, Frieze’s director of the Americas, the fair welcomed an impressive turnout of collectors, artists, and cultural figures, including former mayor Michael Bloomberg, political commentator Anderson Cooper, and art patron Agnes Gund, among others.
This year’s event, featuring more than 60 galleries, saw an array of significant sales on its preview day, though none above the six-figure mark were reported. Hauser & Wirth led with numerous acquisitions, including an Ed Clark painting for $850,000 and works by Henry Taylor and Glenn Ligon fetching $750,000 and $700,000, respectively. Another work by Ed Clark, Yin and Yang (1989), sold by White Cube for $800,000, was among the top sales reported. Pace Gallery also reported robust sales, particularly of Robert Mangold’s new paintings, which ranged from $350,000 to $450,000, and most of its presented sculptures by Arlene Shechet.

European galleries also saw substantial sales, with Thaddaeus Ropac selling a stainless steel sculpture by Tony Cragg for approximately €725,000 (about $776,392) and multiple works by Daniel Richter and Joan Snyder. Stephen Friedman Gallery also sold out the entirety of its Holly Hendry solo booth. The British artist’s wall-based works went for between £6,500 and £15,000 (about $8,137–$18,778).
Significant attention was also paid to Asian artists and galleries, with Gallery Hyundai selling over 10 works by Seung-Taek Lee with prices ranging from $35,000 to $100,000; while Tina Kim Gallery reported sales of works by Suki Seokyeong Kang, Pacita Abad, and Minouk Lim. Kukje Gallery also sold out its booth of Haegue Yang’s paper collages priced between €27,000 and €42,000 ($28,885–$44,932).
