Yilmaz Dziewior, Director of Museum Ludwig, on the Top 6 Works at Art Cologne
There have been few buzzier names in the European curatorial world over the past few years than Yilmaz Dziewior. Director of Cologne’s esteemed Museum Ludwig since February of this year, Dziewior made a name for himself at the Kunsthaus Bregenz, which he led starting in 2009 after leaving the Kunstverein in Hamburg. The curator managed to create an impressively international profile for the small institution located on Lake Constance, garnering critical acclaim for—among others—a survey of Cosima von Bonin’s work early in his tenure and, more recently, “Liebe ist kälter als das Kapital,” a group show mixing emerging artists like Neïl Beloufa and Mariechen Danz with giants like Cindy Sherman and Isa Genzken.
Dziewior was also tapped as commissioner of the Austrian Pavillion at this year’s Venice Biennale, and selected interdisciplinary artist Heimo Zobernig to fill the Robert Kramreiter-conceived space. Ahead of the 2015 edition of Art Cologne, he perused Artsy’s preview of the fair to select six works worthy of any collection—including that of the museum he now runs.

Candida Höfer, Schindler House Los Angeles I, 2000, at Galerie Thomas Zander
Candida Höfer is my neighbor in Marienburg and most of all a fantastic artist. I like the Schindler House a lot, as I have a deep affection for architecture.
Johannes Wohnseifer, Psychology, 2015, at Johann König
Johannes Wohnseifer is a great artist living in Cologne, and I like the piece I have selected a lot.
Sigmar Polke, Untitled, 1993, at Galerie Holtmann
We are showing Sigmar Polke right now in “Alibis,” his big retrospective at the Museum Ludwig.
Louise Bourgeois, Lair, 1986–2000, at Galerie Karsten Greve
We should have more works by Louise Bourgeois in our collection at the Museum Ludwig.
Heimo Zobernig, Ohne Titel, 1986, at Elisabeth & Klaus Thoman
I am showing Heimo Zobernig at the Austrian Pavilion I’m curating in Venice this year.
Petrit Halilaj, Several birds fly away when they understand it (25), 2013, at Chert
Petrit Halilaj is a great young artist who I like a lot. She has a show at the Bundeskunsthalle in Bonn now, and is about to open a show at the Kölnischer Kunstverein.
