As part of the festive milestones of Ch.ACO’s 10th anniversary edition, together with the Intendance of Santiago we have developed a series of urban art interventions (to take place through all of November) that seek to connect the people of and insert the Chilean capital within the global circuit of public art. One of the initiatives is the itinerant project Inside Out, created by French artist JR, which will be implemented starting October 27th in the Metropolitan Region of Chile.

For this tenth edition of Ch.ACO, the celebration extends throughout all of November. Although the fair will take place between the 22nd and 26th, together with the Intendance of Santiago we have developed a series of urban art interventions, so as to dedicate the whole month of November to the arts. The first, which will inaugurate on October 27th in the Bicentenario Park, iconic outdoors park in Vitacura, Santiago, is Inside Out, which will itinerate throughout key sectors of the capital until the end of Ch.ACO Art Fair.

This photographic project, devised and created by the French artist JR, is conceived as an interactive initiative made by and for the people, whose main focus is to account for the citizenship and their local reality. In each of the countries where it has been implemented –to date, it has travelled to over 120 countries, including Turkey, Italy, France, Israel, the U.S and Canada– it is made up of two main stages: the first consists in capturing photographs –close-up portraits of anyone who wants to participate, which in this case, for Inside Out Santiago, will begin on October 27th and 28th with the first pop up station in Parque Bicentenario, and then itinerates through four key districts of the capital: Vitacura, Santiago, Pedro Aguirre Cerda and Melipilla). The second stage consists of the installation; the large scale portraits are finally posted on public urban spaces, in the same communes mentioned above, so as to generate an open initiative in which Santiagos’ citizens are both the protagonists and participants in the creative process and the final art work. Through this project, we seek to connect the over 6 million citizens of Santiago with the public space and also give an account of how necessary it is to make the local social processes and diversity visible.

About JR

JR (Paris, February 22nd, 1983) is a French street artist and photographer. His project Inside Out, which he created in 2011 after winning the TED award, has roamed in more than 120 countries. In 2017 he co-directed the documentary "Faces Places" with Agnès Varda, which won the L'Œil d'or prize at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival.

His work is known worldwide but remains in a state of anonymity, since he chooses to install it in the public sphere, rather than framing it for museums or closed spaces. "The street is the largest gallery in the world," he says.
