Dallas Art Fair Announces Launch of 214 Projects, A New Cultural Venue for Dallas

The Dallas Art Fair is pleased to announce the opening of 214 Projects, a 2,500-square-foot permanent exhibition space and cultural venue in the Dallas Design District. The space will open Saturday, March 2, 2019, with Emmanuel Van der Auwera: White Noise, a solo exhibition supported by Belgian gallery Harlan Levey Projects, who has been a Dallas Art Fair exhibitor since 2015.

214 Projects will allow new, creative possibilities that extend beyond the fair’s duration for Dallas Art Fair participants and the city at large. The space’s exhibitions and programming will be led by the Dallas Art Fair team throughout the year, further deepening the fair’s footprint in the city while providing international exhibitors with a blank canvas to make their mark on Dallas.

“Dallas is a city with a rich cultural landscape. Our exhibitors and their artists can now become a much bigger part of it. Directing this space will strengthen our relationships with them and give them the platform to connect with the city on a deeper level,” says Dallas Art Fair Director, Kelly Cornell.

The space is part of River Bend, a 70,000-square-foot redevelopment spearheaded by Dallas Art Fair Chairman John Sughrue. Home to the new Dallas Art Fair office and contemporary art gallery And Now, 214 Projects is part of a new cultural community that will soon welcome Erin Cluley Gallery, and even more galleries and restaurants.

Thirteen bespoke tile murals by UK-based artist Clare Woods, selected from an open call for submissions from the fair’s exhibitors, will decorate the exterior of 214 Projects and its neighbors in River Bend. To celebrate her involvement, Simon Lee Gallery will present a solo booth of Woods’ work at the eleventh edition of the Dallas Art Fair, from April 11-14, 2019.

“It has been a decade of hard work to bring the fair to where it is in now,” says Dallas Art Fair Chairman, John Sughrue. “Now that we are in our eleventh year, it’s the right time for us to expand our ground and enter the next phase. We want to give our partners more space for artistic opportunities and at the same time give back to the city.”

Emmanuel Van der Auwera: White Noise will remain on view through the Dallas Art Fair (April 11-14, 2019). It will be the artist’s first solo presentation in the United States and will feature his recent works in video sculpture. The exhibition is supported by the Flemish Ministry of Culture.

ABOUT EMMANUEL VAN DER AUWERA Emmanuel Van der Auwera (b. 1982, Belgium) lives and works in Brussels, Belgium. Through filmmaking, video sculpture, theatre, printmaking, and other media, Van der Auwera sets up encounters with images that provoke a questioning of our visual literacy: How do images of contemporary mass media operate on various publics, and to what end? With the formal rigor of a logician, the artist dissects the structure of images; researching how they are engineered, mastering specialized industry techniques, and intervening on their protocol. In so doing, Van der Auwera brings us no closer to a monolithic truth of images, but constructs new paradigms for reading and understanding our relationship to them.

Van der Auwera’s forthcoming exhibition White Noise at 214 Projects (Dallas, Texas) is his first solo presentation in the United States, and will be followed by exhibitions at the Everson Museum of Art (Syracuse, NY, USA) and Botanique (Brussels, Belgium) later in 2019. Van der Auwera is a 2015 Laureate of the Higher Institute for Fine Arts (HISK) post-academic course in Ghent and a 2015 Langui Award recipient of the Young Belgian Art Prize. His work has recently been featured in exhibitions at WIELS (Brussels, Belgium), The Centre Pompidou (Paris, France), Palais de Tokyo (Paris, France), Centro per l’Arte Contemporanea Luigi Pecci (Prato, Italy), Ars Electronica (Linz, Austria), Casino Luxembourg - Forum d'art contemporain (Luxembourg City, Luxembourg), and Mu.ZEE (Ostend, Belgium), among others. In 2018, his work was acquired by KANAL Centre - Pompidou (Brussels, Belgium), Mu.ZEE (Ostend, Belgium) and the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art (Eugene, OR, USA).
