Frieze Masters 2016

Frieze Masters brings together several thousand years of art in a unique, contemporary context. See and buy art from over 130 of the world’s leading galleries specializing in antiquities, Asian art, ethnographic art, illuminated manuscripts, medieval, modern and post-war art, Old Masters and 19th Century, as well as photography, sculpture and wunderkammer.

Solo Exhibitions & Extraordinary Objects in the Main Section
The fair draws 106 established galleries from around the world to present major solo and group exhibitions. This year’s edition features an increased presence of female modern masters. Specialist art and antiquity dealers will bring rare presentations of singular pieces, from an Egyptian mummy mask from the 26th Dynasty (Ariadne, New York), to one of the oldest ancient idols extant in Cyladic art (5th millennium B.C).

Spotlight: Rare Presentations of 20th-Century Artists 
Curated for the first time by Toby Kamps (The Menil Collection, Houston), Spotlight builds on its reputation for thoughtfully designed, museum-quality presentations, revealing foundational movements in art through pioneering 20th-century figures. The section will feature an international selection of painters, sculptors, and Fibre and Land Artists from India, Western and Eastern Europe as well as the United States, who expanded the scope and reach of feminist ideas. It also includes pioneering works in painting, sculptures, drawing, video and social practices by artists from around the world that add new complexity and interest to the stories of modern and contemporary art.

Collections with Sir Norman Rosenthal 
Following its acclaimed debut in 2015, the Collections section returns with eight specialist galleries chosen by Sir Norman Rosenthal. The section features an array of thoughtfully curated presentations of extraordinary historical art and objects of the highest quality, from significant examples of Japanese armor, to Suprematist ceramics.

Frieze Masters Talks 
Co-curated for the first time by Tim Marlow (Royal Academy, London) and Jennifer Higgie (frieze & Frieze Masters Magazine), Frieze Masters Talks will feature speakers including artists Lynette Yiadom-Boakye and Carroll Dunham, critic Alastair Sooke and The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Sheena Wagstaff.

Frieze Sculpture Park 
Following its celebrated three-month residency in 2015-16, Frieze Sculpture Park will return to the English Gardens in The Regent’s Park, creating a major free cultural attraction at the heart of London, curated by Clare Lilley (Yorkshire Sculpture Park) and featuring large-scale artworks presented by galleries from both Frieze London and Frieze Masters.
