Margaux Huille's Curated Picks from African Galleries Now

Margaux Huille is the director of Fondation H, a private art foundation from Madagascar with exhibition spaces in Antananarivo and Paris, hosting temporary exhibitions based on carte blanches and residencies for invited artists, several programmes dedicated to nurturing the Indian Ocean art scene (Prix Paritana, Ainga workshops) and connecting with visitors, and a collection.

“I was delighted to discover the selection of works presented at this edition of African Galleries Now on Artsy, with a great proportion of artists from Southern Africa that I particularly enjoyed. I found the selection of textile works interesting, especially works by Turiya Magadlela – who has such a powerful perspective and is already represented in Fondation H’s collection – as well as Mozambican-born Lizette Chirrime, and the young Angolan artist Pamina Sebastiao, whose admirable and complexe textile installations I discovered browsing the online fair.

Textile is an important part of the collection, which is in many ways rooted in the work of Madame Zo, a remarkable artist from Madagascar, very close to Fondation H and who unfortunately passed away in 2020. I was also happy to see new works by Congolese-born, South Africa based Patrick Bongoy, who uses found rubber for his large, intriguing tapestries. I also highlighted two painters from very different backgrounds, both presenting an outstanding use of colors: renowned Zimbabwean artist Wycliffe Mundopa, and recently graduated South African Anico Mostert.”
