Artist William Thomson

First off, "What an amazing artist; William Thomson is truly one of the best of the American painters I’ve had the opportunity to work with." Unfortunately, he passed away in 2014 but left us with an awe inspiring collection.

The experience of rifling through 500 plus paintings, at once, was an experience unto itself. It was the first time in a long while where art moved me in such a visceral way; it gave me goose bumps, chills and brought tears to my eyes. I just couldn't stop looking through his work and 5 hours later he was like, "Are you ever going to leave,"? That was in 2009 and the experience still haunts me to this day. I knew I was standing amid a master’s collection.

Bill Thomson's work evokes a multitude of feelings, moods even brings forth some harsh realities, but what's always apparent is the skill of his brush and the use of color. His brushwork is flawless as he uses both broad and tight strokes, texture, even soft and sharp edges to help create the unique mood of each piece. His color usage is a spectacular exhibition of his renowned earth tone palette. Bill works in all kinds of mediums from acrylic, encaustic, egg tempera, oil to watercolor but somehow, they all tie together producing an amazing narrative. I've always imagined him as a scientist, experimenting endlessly with his medium in order to create an experience through his images. By giving homage to some of the greatest masters through his hand, style and voice, his love of history is clearly shown. Bill Thomson is represented in collections of: Britain Museum of American Art, Holyoke Museum of Art & History, Mattatuck Museum, DeCordova Museum, Berkshire Museum, and Slater Museum.

He’s definitely an artist worth diving into and collecting.
