Cape Town Art Fair (CTAF) will end on a high with a stimulating programme of back-to-back screenings taking place on Sunday 19 February 2017. The CTAF 2017 Film Programme features four carefully selected short screenings by two artists. These videos will be played in a loop to allow visitors ample opportunity to see them. The screenings will start at 16h00 and end at 17h00 and takes place in the Talks Auditorium at the fair.
Of particular note is the screening of “Inzilo” by much-in-demand South African artist, Mohau Modisakeng. Inzilo is a Zulu word meaning ‘mourning’ ‘fasting’ or ‘widowhood’. Modisakeng adapts traditional rituals as a metaphor for narrating the experience of collective grief associated with the losses suffered because of apartheid.
Also on the bill is Zimbabwean artist Nora Chipaumire, whose film “Afro Promo #1 King Lady” explores the lack of black superhoeroes in a world where black bodies are under constant threat.
CTAF curator Tumelo Mosaka selected these videos “because of their performative approach directed towards the moving image, used to challenge viewer perceptions about Africa. The work is confrontational but also contemplative as both artists seek to unravel expectations that are associated with black bodies and the burden of historical representation.”
There is no additional cost to view the screenings, as the price is included in the cost of a ticket to the Fair itself. Tickets for CTAF 2017 are available online: http://www.capetownartfair.co.za/book-tickets/ or via Computicket outlets.
