CHART SOCIAL PROGRAMME AT CHART ART FAIR 2017: DETAILS ANNOUNCED

In celebration of it’s 5th anniversary Chart Art Fair presents its most ambition SOCIAL programme to date. We have added multiple new sections and events. Below are selected highlights, with more information to be released in August 2017:

-CHART X BASEL X CC – A collaboration between CHART ART FAIR and The City of Basel creating the large-scale exhibition EX SITU. SAMPLES OF LIFEFORMS, showing existing and specially commissioned art works at Copenhagen Contemporary by artists including A Kassen, Laurent Huet and Tomás Saraceno amongst others, curated by Claire Hoffmann, Alice Wilke, Jannie Haagemann and Toke Lykkeberg

-CHART DESIGN presents a curated programme entitled WHAT IT IS, WHEN IT IS NOT, which will include a series of talks, performative lectures and public space projects focusing on the ambiguity of design

-CORPUS X CHART – A three-year interdisciplinary collaboration with The Royal Danish Ballet’s experimental dance company CORPUS

-CHART X HAY – A project with Danish furniture and accessory brand HAY with posters available by CHART artists

-A poster project by renowned French artist LAURE PROUVOST that will be seen all over Copenhagen leading up to the fair.

-CHART EMERGING spotlights emerging artists from the Nordic region in an exhibition curated by Helga Christoffersen, curator at the New Museum in New York

-The CHART TALKS programme with influential art world speakers, including Alex Da Corte, Bosco Sodi, Chris Fite-Wassilak, Christian Falsnaes, Goldin+Senneby, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Helga Christoffersen, Justin McGuirk, Katharine Stout, Kirstine Roepstorff, Maria Lind, Mark Leckey, Peter Pakesch, Richard Parry, Shwetal Patel, Sofia Hernández Chong Cuy, Stefanie Hessler, and Tue Greenfort amongst others

-The CHART ARCHITECTURE competition judged by Bjarke Ingels, Bjørnstjerne Christiansen, Débora Mesa, Dorte Foss, Simon Frommenwiler and Klaus Kastbjerg

-Music and art performances by Alex Da Corte, Charlie Roberts, Francesco Pedraglio, Katharina Grosse & Stefan Schneider, Martin Creed, Merike Estner, and Lorenzo Senni as part of the COURTYARD PROGRAMME and OPENING CONCERT.

CHART ART FAIR

Representing 33 of the leading contemporary art galleries from the Nordic region, CHART ART FAIR returns to The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts Kunsthal Charlottenborg in Copenhagen for its 5th edition from 1 – 3 September 2017. Coinciding with the fair, CHART SOCIAL functions as a programme of cultural events and exhibitions exploring the crossovers between art, design, architecture, music, performance and gastronomy. CHART SOCIAL, which is free and open to the public, will take place at Kunsthal Charlottenborg and various other locations around the city leading up to and during the fair. The CHART SOCIAL programme is generously supported by The City of Copenhagen.

CHART X BASEL X CC

In 2017 CHART extends beyond Kunsthal Charlottenborg to a second venue at Copenhagen Contemporary on Papirøen in a new cultural partnership between the City of Basel and Copenhagen. This partnership initiated by Philippe Bischof, director of the Office for Cultural Affairs at the Presidential Department of the Canton Basel-Stadt, Benedikt Wechsler, the Swiss ambassador in Denmark, and CHART, has been realised in collaboration with Copenhagen Contemporary.

CHART and Basel have invited Swiss curators ALICE WILKE and CLAIRE HOFFMANN, and Danish curators JANNIE HAAGEMANN and TOKE LYKKEBERG to create an exhibition of new 
and existing large-scale works by Swiss and Nordic represented artists installed in Copenhagen Contemporary’s 1,100 square metre space.

The exhibition, titled EX SITU. SAMPLES OF LIFEFORMS, features the Swiss and CHART gallery artists A KASSEN, ALAN BOGANA, DOMINIQUE KOCH, HANNAH WEINBERGER, LAUREN HURET, LENA MARIA THÜRING, PEDRO WIRZ, RONI HORN and TOMÁS SARACENO. The exhibition will launch during CHART and will stay open until 28 November 2017.

CHART ART FAIR FILM

CHART is pleased to announce the introduction of a new section of the fair: CHART ART FAIR FILM, a film programme. The programme offers a series of scheduled screenings that will be presented in the new and specially designed cinema in Kunsthal Charlottenborg. CHART ART FAIR FILM will extend beyond the dates of the fair and will be included as part of Kunsthal Charlottenborg’s programme. The programme will present films by selected CHART gallery artists including MARINA ABRAMOVIĆ, MARIA FRIBERG, NUG, TUOMAS A. LAITINEN, SIGURÐUR GUÐJÓNSSON and STEINA.

CHART DESIGN

Inaugurated in 2016, CHART DESIGN will present this year a curated programme entitled WHAT IT IS, WHEN IT IS NOT, including a series of talks, performative lectures and public space projects focusing on the ambiguity of design.

WHAT IT IS, WHEN IT IS NOT acts as a prelude to the expansion of CHART DESIGN into an increasingly adventurous fair, exhibition and communication platform hosted in a unique off-site location in 2018.

CHART is pleased to announce that NANNA BALSLEV STRØJER has joined the team as director of CHART DESIGN.

LILLIAN TØRLEN

Norwegian ceramicist LILLIAN TØRLEN is interested in how people experience 
their immediate surroundings and uses sculpture and installation to invite the viewer to re-evaluate spaces and materials in form and function. Her site-specific project RESONANCE is a sprawling installation comprising hundreds of porcelain handkerchiefs scattered by the wind and caught in cracks of brick walls, lamp posts and balconies, activating the route between Kunsthal Charlottenborg and Copenhagen Contemporary.

GOLDIN+SENNEBY

Swedish performance duo GOLDIN+SENNEBY is a framework for collaboration set up by artists SIMON GOLDIN and JAKOB SENNEBY exploring juridical, financial and spatial constructs through notions of the performative and the virtual.

With the performance ACID MONEY, Goldin+Senneby will engage visitors in a performative lecture exploring the history of “conspiracy magic” together with magician MALIN NILSSON and sociologist THÉO BOURGEON. The audience is invited to join a trip from cold war brainwashing techniques to contemporary finance magic. This event offers a special opportunity to bring some magic home with you.

HANNE G

Danish artist HANNE G’s installation, THE DUET, explores the sculptural and aesthetic potential of textile in a frozen form combined with a musical composition created by repetitive, random patterns. This interactive audiovisual installation engages its audience directly using built-in sensors to detect movement and activate an audio element, producing a song as people approach, move away from and walk around the sculptures.

CHART SOCIAL

CORPUS X CHART

For the next three years, CHART and CORPUS will jointly develop an annual project, exploring the artistic possibilities across the fields of performing and visual arts. Each performance will challenge the audience’s traditional expectations of the physical and visual experience of each genre and test new forms of collaboration and artistic innovation.

CHART X HAY

New in 2017 is a collaborative poster project by CHART and Danish design brand HAY. Each year CHART will select a series of works by CHART artists to be acquired by HAY’s newly established art collection. The artists’ original works will be reproduced as posters and will be available to purchase during CHART in the foyer of Kunsthal Charlottenborg. Following CHART, the posters will be sold in HAY stores internationally.

LAURE PROUVOST

Turner Prize-winning artist Laure Prouvost has created a series of new works for a large-scale, art project that will take place across both public and private spaces in Copenhagen. Prouvost has created three new artworks, which will be installed in the form of thousands of posters, billboards and banners on private residents’ balconies. The work will be launched two weeks prior to CHART ART FAIR, activating the citizens of Copenhagen.

CHART EMERGING

CHART EMERGING aims to give a platform and voice to a young and upcoming generation of Nordic artists. CHART EMERGING 2017 is curated by HELGA CHRISTOFFERSEN, assistant curator at the New Museum, New York, and will take form as a research project that will produce a travelling exhibition and a reference publication documenting a generation of young Nordic artists.

CHART TALKS

CHART ART FAIR’s Talks programme will once again be programmed by ArtReview and moderated by Mark Rappolt, editor-in-chief and Oliver Basciano, international editor. Under the provocative heading THE END OF THE ART WORLD AS WE KNOW IT The talks will explore how the instability of political structures globally, questions about globalisation, and the undermining of critical hierarchies effects the production, distribution and reading of art. The speakers are a selection of some of the most influential artists, designers, museum directors, critics and curators globally and this year include ALEX DA CORTE, BOSCO SODI, CHRIS FITE-WASSILAK, CHRISTIAN FALSNAES, GOLDIN+SENNEBY, HANS ULRICH OBRIST, HELGA CHRISTOFFERSEN, JUSTIN MCGUIRK, KATHARINE STOUT, KIRSTINE ROEPSTORFF, MARIA LIND, MARK LECKEY, PETER PAKESCH, RICHARD PARRY, SHWETAL PATEL, SOFIA HERNÁNDEZ CHONG CUY, STEFANIE HESSLER and TUE GREENFORT amongst others.

CHART TALKS will take place Saturday 2 September and Sunday 3 September at the Kuppelsalen of The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts Kunsthal Charlottenborg and at private collectors’ homes.
