Life After Dark
Paintings by Brooklyn based artist, Stephen Fox
Stephen Fox’s hyper-realistic paintings bestow the viewer with insight into life
lived nocturnally. His work depicts night scenes bathed in dramatic lighting,
illuminating the beauty that hides underneath the cover of darkness. Fox was
first inspired by the headlights of a passing car illuminating the night time
landscapes of his childhood. His work has now progressed to feature a variety of
subjects, from lonely roadways, to bodies of water, to urban landscapes—but he
interprets each location with the same beautifully cinematic style.
Fox creates striking imagery that surpasses the mere replication of a
photographic image, and instead invokes a mysterious sense of narrative within
each painting. Brought up in Richmond, Virginia, Fox’s fascination with art
blossomed at a young age. Later he received his Bachelors of Fine Arts from
VCU and then his Masters from Maryland Institute College of Art, where he more
closely defined the subject matter he was destined to explore in the subsequent
decades. During this time, Fox began to introduce a new element into his work-
the human figure. While an element of humanity was always present in the
mysterious details of each painting, the inclusion of people inhabiting his
nighttime landscapes provides a perfect finishing touch.
Fox is now living and working in Brooklyn, NY, earning many prestigious
accomplishments such as “Southeastern Center for Contemporary Arts
Professional Artist Fellowship” and “Virginia Museum Professional Artist’s
Fellowship”. Fox continues to exhibit across the U.S., and his work can be found
in numerous private and corporate collections around the world.
