Jane Smaldone
Smaldone's magical paintings combine her long-standing interest in still life, portraiture, and landscape, interweaving the genres into a highly personal style. Inspired by art historical traditions as diverse and far-reaching as Chinese landscape painting, Mexican retablos and miracle paintings, French Surrealism and Early American portraiture, Jane fuses her historical references into potent contemporary hybrids. Birds, butterflies and foxes inhabiting worlds of fantastic flowers, auspicious trees and rounded mountains become compositions of highly poetic, symbolic and magical narratives.
Smaldone's work is included in many private, corporate and public collections internationally, including the Peabody Essex Museum, Wellington Management, and the Danforth Museum. Her work has been the subject of numerous solo shows in the United States and Canada.
